So, I'm guessing this is public speaking equally opposed to getting up in front end of an auditorium with dignitaries present?

If it'southward public speaking, generally you don't have to be too formal. They're here to listen to what you take to say, so it's assumed by turning upward that they know who you are and you have their attention. You may, of course, acknowledge them and thank them for coming, but if they haven't actually come for you it's best to start with a solid introduction.

I recollect the 'Ladies and Gentlemen' being a no-no is that it'southward not an introduction, when information technology's often used as one (in the style, "Ladies and Gentlemen, non sequitur". Yous demand a proper introduction, and the greeting is more than to become people's attention and to be formal than to really be content. Generally a good introduction should say what y'all're talking virtually and your angle on the topic. As the 'SPEECH DO'S' suggests, starting off the spoken communication by something directly addressing it is a great way to become going, such as a joke or quotation or a general statement. A good introduction should tell the audition the topic you're talking almost, why they should care, and in broad terms what yous'll be touching on. (Introductions take practise. I was terrible at them for much of my high school career.)

A good spoken communication is like a proficient essay in that at that place's a narrative thread running through information technology. This is even more important in speeches than in essays, where you can become abroad with disconnected thoughts more readily. Speeches should menstruum, and then y'all should be able to tell a (sparse) story with merely your principal points. The body of your speech is examining those points, filling them out with justification and backstory that explains why those points are important and how they came to exist so. That you find them interesting and worthy of discussion is normally what yous spend the intro talking about.

In an auditorium with dignitaries nowadays, however, the form is almost always to address each dignitary in turn with their full title, working from most important to to the lowest degree, ending with 'ladies and gentlemen'.
