1. April O'Neil, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Investigative reporter April O'Neil didn't have time to be picking out a new outfit every day. She had shit to do. Places to go. Evil and crime to root out and expose for her Channel 6 TV news audience. She probably didn't even bother owning other clothes. Why would she? That jumpsuit was working for her and when you find something fashionable and flattering that you can wear to work, on the weekend, and when you're hanging out in the sewer with a band of pizza-loving turtles, you stick with it.
2. Rogue, X-Men
Skin-tight bodysuits were pretty much required field gear for every member of Professor Xavier's X-Men, but everyone got to accessorize their spandex second skins in different ways: Storm had her cape, Gambit had his long coat, but Rogue was by far the best dressed of the bunch — the cropped leather jacket, the low-slung hip belt, and those over-the-knee boots! All the X-Men had sexy bodies, but Rogue was hot. That headband with her weird, two-tone hair in all those giant loose waves! I can't. I don't know why Wolverine was so hung up on boring old Jean Grey. With Rogue in the room I'm pretty sure every other person (male or female) would just fade to black.
3. Jane Lane, Daria
Quinn and her frenemies in the fashion club might have been the ones poring over fashion magazines and obsessing about designer clothes, but Jane was the one with real style. It just felt so natural with Jane, like she wore the same outfit every day because it was on the floor by the bed when she woke up in the morning and she couldn't be bothered to actually go to the closet and pick out something new. She was just so damned cool, you know??!!!
4. Gadget, Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers
Like April O'Neil from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Gadget knew the value of a good jumpsuit when you need to get shit done, but she was also kind of a fashion plate — her crop-top-and-high-waisted-shorts game was on point and she was doing the whole co-ord thing long before the rest of us.
5. Jessica Rabbit, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
You can't talk about stylish cartoon characters without mentioning Jessica Rabbit. You just can't. Sure, she was a little trashy with her strapless, backless, slit-to-the-hip sparkle dress and fetish heels, but she did it so well. She's an icon. That's just how it is.
6. The Ashleys, Recess
The Ashleys obviously took their style cues from Cher Horowitz and that is never a wrong move. Trends come and go, but Clueless is forever.
7. Charlotte Pickles, Rugrats
Angelica's mom was a ball-busting, take-no-prisoners queen bitch just trying to make it in the male-dominated business world. And she was killing it. With her power suits, neckties, and high ponytails, she put the "werk" in "workwear."
8. Maleficent, Sleeping Beauty
When it comes to discussions of style in Disney cartoons, it's the princesses who get the vast majority of the attention, but more often than not, it's actually the villains who have the best outfits, and none more so than Maleficent. That hat alone is enough to blow anything and everything princess Aurora ever wore completely out of the water. Add the dramatic cape and that amazing black cocktail ring and there has literally never been a chicer, more stylish character in the history of Disney animation and probably never will be again.
9. Judy Funny, Doug
Doug's too-cool older sister had an undeniable flair for dramatic fashion. Sure, the beret and sunglasses were a bit affected (especially indoors and at night), but it was a look and you have to admire that level of commitment. Also, her bangs were epic — the way she shaved the sides of her head to make them even more dramatic. Now that's some dedication!
10. She-Ra, She-Ra Princess of Power
She-Ra is the only cartoon character who could maybe, possibly give Maleficent a run for her money in the fabulous accessories department — the headpiece, the choker, the arm-guards, those boots (I love a crime fighter in a high heel)! Even her flying unicorn had amazing style — that pink and blue armor really brought out the colors in his wings.
11. Pepper Ann Pearson, Pepper Ann
Pepper Ann wasn't the coolest girl in school or the most popular, but she certainly had the flyest style. With her boxy crop-top, printed miniskirt worn over jeans (some might say tights, but, to me, they are skinny jeans), scrunched socks, and black Chucks, Pepper Ann was as close to Clarissa Darling as any cartoon character has ever been, and Clarissa Darling is a fashion icon of the highest order.
12. Morgana McCawber, Darkwing Duck
Morgana was Darkwing's girlfriend and although she wasn't on the show often, she never failed to make an impression with her spooky red gown and dramatic up-do — style holdovers from her days as a supervillain before Darkwing reformed her. Why is evil always so stylish?
13. Sunni Gummi, The Gummi Bears
How cute was Sunni in her little green dress with matching slouchy green booties??!! I never understood why she was so obsessed with Cala's style. Sure, Cala was a princess, but there was nothing interesting about her. Also Sunni's short, forward-swept blonde hair was waaaaaaay cooler than that tired Frozen-before-Frozen-Pinterest-puke braid Cala was always sporting.
14. Cruella De Vil, 101 Dalmations
Love it or hate it, nothing says "chic" like an oversize fur, especially when it is draped over a barely-there slip dress. I'm convinced that Carrie Bradshaw's whole giant-fur-and-a-slip-dress look for her first date with Big (and other subsequent outings) was a secret homage to Cruella and her incredible take-what-you-want style. It has to have been, right?
15. Jem and the Holograms, Jem and the Holograms
Jem and her band were the height of '80s fashion-cool, and their looks have never been equaled, in animation or IRL. They were, and are, the very definition of "glam." All others must bow before them. Also, Jem could change her outfit just by tugging on her earring, and what wouldn't any of us give for such jewelry?
